About Alderlore
How did you start Alderlore?
Alderlore began in 2018 whilst playing Dungeons & Dragons with colleagues - starting as a campaign setting and eventually becoming a standalone world.
What are your plans?
The Alderlore project uses an emergent strategy. The project will always continue to embrace new mediums and spontaneous innovation.
How do you make your work?
Alderlore pieces are a careful mix of photobashing, collage and other concept design techniques. Contrary to popular belief, Alderlore works are not hand-painted.
What does Alderlore mean?
The Alder tree - one of the 25 trees of the Ogham alphabet - and was believed to form part of an ancient seasonal calendar of magic. Alder = tree of defence, Lore = Folklore.
How do you pronounce it ‘Alderlore’?
Alderlore is pronounced “awl·duh lawr”. It is not pronounced with an “æl” sound (rhyming with "pal").
Is Alderlore a team?
Nope, Alderlore is the sole property of Fox Rogers, and everything in the project is designed and created by me!
Commissions & Collaborations
Do you take commissions?
No, unfortunately Alderlore is not accepting commissions at this time. All focus is on the production of the world, book and other projects.
Can I work on Alderlore?
If you think you can add value to the world of Alderlore, I’d love to hear from you. At the moment the project is looking for production partners.
Can I use your work in my project?
No. Please do not use, feature, or share Alderlore work without proper credit. All Intellectual Property, licences and trademarks are owned by Fox Rogers.
Are you looking to Collaborate?
I’m always open to collaboration so I’d love to hear from you if you have an idea you’d like to discuss. Please bear in mind I retain all rights and properties of Alderlore projects.
About Fox
Is your name actually Fox?
Yes, after my great grandfather William Fox Rogers who referred to himself as ‘Fox’. I wrote a memoir about him in 2012 and changed my name shortly after.
What do you do outside of worldbuilding?
For the past 10 years i’ve worked in the design industry as a creative generalist - doing a mix of branding, graphic design, 3d design and other projects.
Are you building any other worlds?
Not explicitly, but my work with Those Beyond often has me making experiences and games for other worlds, brands and IPs.
How did you get into worldbuilding?
I believe the fantasy genre is underserved from a design standpoint - and eventually I realised my love for branding and design could be valued in a fictional setting.
About Alderlore: Volume One
Why is the book so expensive?
It’s really, really hard to make a quality book, and after almost 8 years of building Alderlore, I felt like the outcome had to aesthetically reflect the time and effort i’ve put into this world. As a result, I funded the entire book production run myself, using UK-based printers and binders, and produced the book I always dreamed of.
Alderlore: Volume One isn’t at a price point for everyone, and in the future, I hope to do a more economic run - but what was important to me personally was to create something beautiful.
When will you post to my [currently unavailable] country?
I’m trying my hardest to work out fulfilment of the book to many countries, but in the case of some, the costs are not yet economical - hold tight! It will be available, and I’ll be posting updates whenever new countries become available.
Is there really only 140 books? What happens when they sell out? Will they be gone forever?
Yes - there will only ever be 140 in this Collector’s Edition, and this is reflected in its ISBN. Once the Collector’s Edition has sold out, I’ll be looking at a second impression, where I also hope to reduce the overall specification and scope.
I ordered a book and I have a concern
Please reach out to me. I’m more than happy to help, and i’ll try my hardest to rectify any issues that arise across fulfilment. Please also note: I am just one person, so please bear with me!
Worldbuilding Tips
What programs do you use? Tutorials?
Alderlore uses the Adobe suite; Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and After Effects. Some pieces are also done in C4D. Unfortunately I do not do tutorials for Alderlore.
How can I start worldbuilding?
There are many ways to start, but my advice is to start with your strongest skill - whether that be design, illustration or writing - and branch out from there.
Is there a worldbuilding community?
Yes! The worldbuilding community is fantastic, active and supportive. Start at the worldbuilding subreddit.
I’m struggling with my world, help?
I am always happy to give advice wherever possible. Please get in contact and I will try to respond asap.
